A Sovereign Death Midwifery

Serving Cooperstown, Cherry Valley, Oneonta, and Surrounding Areas

What is a Death Midwife?

In a nutshell, a death midwife provides non-medical, emotional, spiritual, and logistical support to individuals and their families before, during, and after death.

When you begin to think about your own death, the many details surrounding your transition can feel overwhelming. Will and trust documents, Power of Attorney and Advance Healthcare Directives, choosing your healthcare advocate, creating an Advance Death Care plan — not to mention the tender, practical task of closing out a life. The energy and grief these responsibilities require deserve support. A death midwife can help.

Once the details are in place, the focus turns to what truly matters — the real, human heart of things. Possessions, weather, bank accounts — none of these hold meaning in the end. What matters most are the relationships you’ve built, the words you still wish to say, the love you still want to express, and the burdens ready to be released. A death midwife can help create the space for that sacred work.

Most people die from an illness or disease process, often painful and frightening. The emotions, uncertainty, and the need for care in these moments are all part of a death midwife’s role. We sit with you. We collaborate with hospice to ensure comfort and dignity. We witness, we tend, and we stay present. After your final breath, we remain with your loved ones in ritual — through prayer, washing and preparing the body, or creating a home vigil for family and friends to gather and grieve. We can also coordinate with funeral homes and other providers, allowing the family to rest in mourning without the weight of logistics.

This is the heart of what a death midwife offers — presence, guidance, and care through one of life’s most profound transitions. Every family, every story, and every death is unique, and we are here to honor them all.

A 30-minute phone consultation is an opportunity for us to connect, explore your needs, and see if we’re a good fit. We’ll talk about where you are in your journey — whether you’re preparing for your own transition, supporting a loved one, or simply curious about what end-of-life care can look like.

During our call, I’ll listen to what’s most present for you and share how I can support — whether that’s guidance around paperwork and planning, help navigating family dynamics, or emotional and spiritual care as death approaches.

This time is yours. You can ask questions, share concerns, or just begin to name what feels heavy. Together, we’ll identify what kind of support feels right for you moving forward.
